James Burke: Connections

I’ve realized I may be a little presumptuous posting links to lengthy podcasts and such, like you’ve got time in your day.  However, this is one of my favorite shows of all time.  It’s up there with ‘Cosmos’ in my opinion.  It’s James Burke’s series about technological innovation.  His primary theme is to dispel the myth of the lone inventor have a moment of inspiration.  Nothing occurs in a vacuum.  One inventor builds upon the work of his predecessors and on and on.  He starts each program with a ‘modern day’ technology (The show was first aired in 1978), and works backward through the innovations that built upon each other to bring us to the current day.  I’ll admit his outfits are a little hard to overlook, but the message still rings true.  I’m embarassed to admit how many times I’ve watched each of these episodes over and over.  If you’re into history and invention, this is as good as it gets in my humble opinion.  As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Pulsing Circuit Update

OK, so apparently I totally underestimated the complexity and effort this circuit would entail.  I spoke with the freelancer this morning and realized I’d made some mistakes and I’m going to have to regroup.  The schematic is not a graphical representation of the actual wiring diagram.  I’m going to translate the schematic to an actual wiring diagram on graph paper and put soldering iron to perfboard once again.  Even after I move past my rookie mistakes, subsequent circuits will still require hours to assemble each so it looks like I’ll have to investigate outsourcing assembly as well.  Hopefully my next post on this subject will include a video of the working circuit - fingers crossed.

Still no word on my virtual house plans.

The Pulsing Circuit

My Guru.com freelancer in Deleware has completed the pulsing LED circuit I commissioned for backlighting our Adorn Identity pieces.  I’m super excited.  I ordered all of the components on Wednesday using the bill of materials he provided as one of the project deliverables.  It looks like the components may arrive today (Mouser.com) along with my new soldering iron (Amazon.com).  With any luck, I’ll post a video this weekend of the pulsing LED circuit in all its glory.  Can’t wait to ‘nerd out’ while watching Sunday football.

I’ve also sent the dimensioned floor plan (below) and interior pictures to Habib in Bangladesh to create my 3D virtual house model.  This will be the preliminary step in enabling me to create a virtual portfolio of Adorn Identity pieces in computer generated rooms.  I shall post these glorious results as I receive them as well.
